Leaving Wonderland

A Poem by Victoria Lynn Hall

Did we ever really fall down the rabbit hole
or did we just go looking for logic
in an illogical world?

Are we trying to stay in a place we've outgrown?

How small must we feel before we disappear?

Do we have to keep moving to stay above water?

Why would we stop?
Just to smell the painted roses?

Why do we keep playing games that are rigged for royalty
no matter what cards are drawn?

Who really has time to stay for tea
with those who disguise madness with civility?

Why do we entertain riddles with no answers?

Why attend the dance to our own demise?

How many lives did the Cheshire cat spend
trying to blend in?

How many lives do we get in this curious life?

And why would we spend them wondering
or wandering alone
among unfamiliar creatures
devoid of warmth or generosity?

Are we the witness or the defendant
when the truth is constantly on trial?

How long can we remain a sane voice
in a land where everyone is going crazy
just to survive?

Alice woke up from that story
so why can't we?

Is this more than a dream
or no less than a nightmare?

If we're lucky enough to leave Wonderland
will it ever leave us?
