I Call Her Mother

A Poem by Victoria Lynn Hall

Nature is my religion
and my science
Her intelligence
is unmatched by men
Our illness
is our departure
from her order
Our healing
has always relied
on our matching her rhythms
and her tides

If we must have a leader
If we must worship a God
why would it not be the ground
that grows our food?
The air we breathe?
The water we drink?
The Sun that it all revolves around?
What expert is more knowledgeable
than life?

My rebellious spirit
is simply my love for her
and my fear of all
that defies her
My courage is only the will to obey
the laws which created me
over the laws which seek to destroy her
I call her Mother
And no other will ever rule me
