You Probably Won’t Save The World

A Poem by Victoria Lynn Hall

You probably won't save the world
with condemnation
You probably won't save the world
with desperation
You probably won't save the world
by reading theory
You probably won't save the world
by believing every conspiracy

You probably won't save the world
from your high horse
You probably won't save the world
and might just make it worse
You probably won't save the world
just to prove that you are strong
You probably won't save the world
because you so want to belong

You probably won't save the world
with love & light
You probably won't save the world
by always being right
You probably won't save the world
by denying your own confusion
You probably won't save the world
by saying it's just an illusion

You can't save the ocean
that you're drowning in
You can't save your soul
by naming someone else's sins
When other people lose
that doesn't mean you win
Though the opposite is true
for so many of your brethren
They may still save you
before you can save them

For as the poet said,
“No one way works”
So we each must do our part
perhaps not knowing what it's worth
With no glory or applause
for having the ultimate solution
but rather quietly, consistently
making our small contribution

We probably won't save the world
but when dust returns to dust
perhaps we'll find the world
saved us
