Spaceship Earth

A Poem by Victoria Lynn Hall

Before a tree becomes a tree
it has to be a seed
it has to grow roots
before it can sprout leaves
it has to dig into the dirt
as it reaches toward the sky
and as long as we're on spaceship earth
so must you and I

To truly grow up
we must also grow down
and with reverence, with love
fully inhabit this sacred ground
but that doesn't mean
we can't live among the stars
for within this sphere of blue and green
that's exactly where we are

We don't have to travel to mars
We don't have to fly to the moon
We can heal this planet's scars
by seeing to our own wounds
to make ourselves whole
by erasing the divide
between our substance and our souls
between nature and humankind

We have always been
along with this spinning ball
at home in the heavens
a part of one and all
There is no need to rule or possess
when we belong to everything
It is only when we insist on separateness
that we forget our roots & our wings
