People on social media have actually said to me, “At least Democrats say the right things”. To me this is what makes them arguably more dangerous than Republicans. If you’ve ever been in a relationship with someone who says all the right things but then behaves in a way that contradicts those things, you know how disorienting and destructive that can be.

I can’t say that all politicians are narcissists but I will say that what a lot of them have in common with narcissists is that they know exactly what people want to hear and they use that knowledge to their own benefit at the expense of others.

So a narcissistic partner might tell you that you are their soulmate and the only one for them and cheat on you the next day. And a government official will tell you that, “The U.S. will continue to stand up for the brave and necessary work of journalists around the world” while they are torturing a journalist for exposing their government’s war crimes.

In either case, they don’t get credit for saying the right things and then doing the exact opposite. That is called lying.
