Keeping Score

A Poem by Victoria Lynn Hall

Greed is a manifestation of fear
A belief in scarcity
A forgetfulness of why we are here
A shallow insecurity

The powerful in the outer world
are the most fearful within
Though they appear to be ruthless and bold
A fragile heart beats under their skin

When every interaction
is a transaction
something doesn't add up

For when you measure life
by addition and subtraction
there never seems to be enough

And yet there is no end
to what we can gain
and learn from love

Giving is how we multiply
By nurturing seeds we grow
deeper roots and branches that reach the sky
bearing fruit from every blessing we bestow

Greed is a miscalculation
A human error we can and must correct
not with division but reunification
of our emotions and our intellect

How rich we all will be
when we stop keeping score
And start practicing the alchemy
of taking less and having more
