No Applause

A Poem by Victoria Lynn Hall

No applause for doing
something more than nothing
when so many are in need

No applause for deciding
which children you'll let starve
and which children you will feed

No applause for slogans
or soundbites about justice
or liberty

When truth tellers are imprisoned
while the war criminals
go free

No applause for a compromise
between two sides
when both sides are guilty

Of robbing the poor
so the rich can afford
to destroy the earth and the sea

I don't subscribe to hate
but I refuse to celebrate
what at best is mediocrity

If you were an actor
I might consider
an ovation for the lines you deliver

But you're just a liar
so no sir
you'll get no applause from me
