Common Ground

A Poem by Victoria Lynn Hall

We can think differently
and still feel the same
We can want opposite things
but our collective needs remain

Our likes and dislikes
color the surface of our lives
but we all require the same nourishment
to survive

Must we struggle before we can see
how much we are bound
Must we all be buried six feet deep
to finally find our common ground

Or can we start digging now
not for the riches of the earth
or the treasures under the sea

But even further down
to the bedrock of our own worth
until at last we might believe

that we can be both united and free
