Alice returns to New York City after her trip around the world. Where to next?! Society has trained us to hustle to the next project, the next mission or the next job. But Alice needs time to process all that she has learned and witnessed in the international rabbit hole. She understands it is a privilege to be able step away to gather her thoughts and feelings. After the witnessing of sorrows she wonders…is it okay to want peaceful emotion? Is it okay to do the things that she enjoys? To search for the brightness of the soul? Is it okay?
Alice finds herself in a place not unlike the rabbit hole. A lazy song echoes dreamily as she navigates her way through a crowded tunnel…
“Picture yourself in a boat on a river; With tangerine trees and marmalade skies…”
Was she returning to Wonderland again? The dreamy world seemed to find her without her even trying. But can she un-see what she has now seen? Can she un-know what she now knows? Can we? Can we return to our own Wonderland unchanged? Songs seem to simultaneously play without clashing, easily blending into one another…
“Living is easy with eyes closed; Misunderstanding all you see…”
Alice does not want to pretend she doesn’t know the truths she has uncovered. She doesn’t want to close her eyes as if that would change anything. She doesn’t want to keep truths hidden to make it appear easier (will the Looking Glass soon reveal our illusions?) She has changed. What she would have expected to make her heart shrink in fear, has instead caused her heart to grow with every new truth uncovered.
“Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes…”
Hope exists. When she stepped out of the international rabbit hole she was afraid she had lost the sun, but with each note that fills the tunnel she sees more clearly. She is not gone. Colorful murals cover the walls of the tunnel. A group ahead is laughing. The light at the end of the tunnel. A community…
“Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers…”
Sometimes it is a challenge to find the balance between devastating truths and an unbreakable spirit of hope. It does not serve us to only dwell in dark places or to only seek the light. Alice had to remember that she also found beauty in the international rabbit hole. Did you? When Alice starts to feel lost she returns to the tools of the Wonderland Reboot. Creation and imagination. Art. Writing, Music (like the Beatles* classics). Friendship. And the inspiration of creating a better world for children.
“Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile; The girl with kaleidoscope eyes…”
