The Fear

A poem by Kerri Romeo

We are all running scared

We all shoot to kill

We all see the “other”

We are all living in fear

***

Fight or flight instincts

We say “You are the predator”

They say “I am the prey”

Experience informs our behavior

We are dying afraid

***

You saw it on a television screen

You felt it in a dream

It is not your imagination

Reality has become too real

Obscene

***

I am afraid of you

You are afraid of me

Everything speeds up

Adrenaline

Blinding

Blood rushing

Hearts racing….

Is it mine?

Or is it yours?

Decisions, actions, reactions (chaotic)

Stop!

Silence

Everything…slows…down

Too late

Hatred rising

Injustice crying

Their words justifying

We are afraid

We are living in fear

Hold on to your heart

Hold on to mine
