Show Notes by Victoria Lynn Hall
I have not regularly watched cable news since sometime shortly after 9/11, when my therapist suggested it would be better for my mental health if I stopped.
She was right.
I think it would be better for America’s mental health if we all stopped watching cable news forever or at least for awhile. Yes, that even includes the presidential debates, if we can’t watch them without a healthy amount of skepticism, because without that they are only going to infect us with their shallow talking points, their half truths and lies, their avoidance of what really matters and the fearful narratives they have invented to distract us.
The way both candidates behaved Tuesday night gave us little beyond spectacle and subterfuge and we have all behaved markedly worse because of it. Our own fear has been used against us so effectively that we have become the enemy of ourselves and each other, casting judgement and blame with little more to go on than trendy, generalizing labels (deplorable, fascist, antifa, socialist) and second hand information.
Maybe if we stopped paying attention to cable news and started paying more attention to each other instead, we would rediscover all the things we agree on. All the struggles and hopes we have in common. All the ways we can help one another. All the ways we can love one another, even when we don’t agree about politics, or don’t think we do.
The truth is that if you’re reading this the chances are that in your heart you want a better world for everyone. That means your heart and my heart have the same politics.
Maybe we would agree more if, instead of repeating the fearful narratives of the political media industrial complex, we had the courage to speak from and listen to our hearts more often.
In this episode we talked about the following statement Biden made about Trump during the debate:
“He’s Putin’s puppy. He still refuses to even say anything to Putin about the bounty on the heads of American soldiers.”
While the New York Times reported this as true in their “fact checking” article, that is extremely misleading considering that there is no evidence to support there ever was such a bounty. I suggest reading this piece by Caitlin Johnstone for the full story: Democrats Ignore US Military’s Refutation Of ‘Russian Bounties’ Story
Caitlin also wrote a piece about suspended Twitter suspending 130 Iranian accounts for “attempting to disrupt the public conversation” during the debate, which Jesse also mentioned in this episode.
For more insight into how the media overhypes its reporting on Trump, Jesse suggests this article by Matt Taibbi: The Bombshell Memory Hole
In this episode Jesse mentioned his solo podcast, you can find that at patreon.com/jessecrall
I’ve been doing some short videos with my “Thoughts on Social Media”, including thoughts on how to make it a more healthy, positive experience. Click here for the playlist on YouTube.
